Upalgo Labeling Sound

Acoustic data labeling software

Upalgo Labeling Sound is a desktop application for labeling acoustic events on the spectrogram, developed with acoustics specialists who use it daily. It is designed for large recordings, detailed annotation workflows and offline operation. It handles recordings of fifteen hours and more, supports multichannel data and provides the tools needed to label, review and analyze acoustic events at scale.

Upalgo Labeling Sound

Upalgo Labeling Sound: a spectrogram from 0 to 24 kHz with five boxed whistles, one of them selected, the list of events on the left and the selected event’s label, duration and bandwidth on the right.
Upalgo Labeling Sound: a spectrogram from 0 to 24 kHz with five boxed whistles, one of them selected, the list of events on the left and the selected event’s label, duration and bandwidth on the right.
  1. The events of the recording, each with its label, its band and its fields.
  2. A whistle boxed in time and in frequency; the cursor reads the time, the frequency and the level.
  3. The selected event: its label in the taxonomy, its duration, its bandwidth and its custom fields.
  4. The overview of the file, with the position of the visible window.
Example: odontocete whistles labeled on a hydrophone recording from NOAA's SanctSound project.

Capabilities

  • Spectral analysis

Mel, ERB, Bark, logarithmic and linear frequency scales; FFT size and overlap configurable per file with the waveform synchronised to the visible spectrogram.

  • Listening

Variable playback speed beyond ×16; automatic gain control, equaliser and band-pass filtering; multichannel playback.

  • Annotation

Bounding boxes and contours on the spectrogram; hierarchical label taxonomy and custom fields per event; measurement and harmonic tools; batch editing; full undo history; keyboard-driven workflow.

  • Maritime context

Display AIS information within a configurable radius and use a dedicated view for vessel passages and closest point of approach.

  • Team operation

Distribute annotation tasks through UpalgoDB, work offline and synchronize when connectivity is restored. Track files and reviews, add notes to tasks and recordings, and open recordings directly from UpalgoDB.

  • Automatic detection

Real-time event detection on the spectrogram during playback, submitted to the analyst for validation.
